Transcendent

She sat quietly on the cold grass,
Toying with the hem of her sleeve, thinking...
She waited for the storm within her to pass,
But the tears were stuck despite her rapid blinking,

He put his hand on her tense shoulder,
Swallowing down the hurt when she flinched,
He sat near her as the wind blew colder,
And saw her pained expression, her face pinched,

He said, “what’s the matter sweetheart?”
As she brushed the grass with her fingertips,
She said “the pain is tearing me apart”
And knowingly he pursed his lips,

His thumb wiped a fallen tear from her rosy cheek,
Leaned to kiss her forehead, lips as soft as a feather,
Said: “It’s not the end love, why is your tone so bleak?”
She said: “what if we weren’t meant to be together?”

He sighed and tilted his head, staring at the sky,
She sniffed and clung to him like it was the last time,
He said: “My heart and soul are yours till the day I die”
She said: “I did not think loving you was such a crime”

They sat there, anxious about their story ending,
Their love was greater than life, it was transcendent,
But their families deemed it forbidden, offending...
The only remainder of their love was a golden pendant,

She never took off the pendant for any reason,
She hoped it would mend her shattered soul,
Years passed, and the grass changed with every season,
And on a dreadful day, she ran away from that hellhole,

She left behind the judgmental family and wretched town,
And ran into the arms of the only man she ever adored,
She unshackled herself the chains tearing her down,
Liberated, her happiness was finally restored.
