Spurious

A spurious smile, some forced laughter,
Ignore it now and deal with it after,
She kept up an image of the tough chick,
If only they knew, she was actually sick,

Tearing through her throat were screams of pain,
‘Please help me’ she cried, ‘I’m drowning again’
A waterfall of tears on her throbbing skin,
But no one noticed her burning from within,

‘Stay strong’ she told herself, ‘this too shall pass’
But every step felt like walking on broken glass,
Pause for a second, breathe in & breathe out,
She didn’t tell anyone what she was weeping about,

‘I’m just tired’ became her default answer,
While the ache spread through her like cancer,
Friends would ask her ‘how are you today?’
Hiding her affliction, she’d smile and say
‘Don’t worry about me, I’m okay’
